CMV is the commonest cause of congenital infection.

It can be fatal and can cause serious long-term damage.

There are no drugs of proven efficacy.

So, an effective vaccine would be a major advance.

Attempts to produce an effective vaccine have been around for decades.

In March 2009, Pass et al reported the first CMV vaccine to reduce the risk of infection in pregnancy.

It was only 50% effective, but that is an exciting advance on the present situation.
