Pregnancy after childhood cancer
There has always been concern about such pregnancies.
Would there be more risk of congenital malformation from damage to oocytes?
Would the woman be at more risk of pregnancy complications?
Mueller et al reported on 1898 first births to women who had survived childhood cancer.
A big enough series to give meaningful results.
And a "good news" story.
There was no increase in congenital abnormality risk.
Nor were there more perinatal deaths.
There were small increases in the risk of:
premature delivery - relative risk 1.54,
birthweight < 25 kg. - relative risk 1.31.
The women had an increased risk of diabetes: relative risk 4.92, which is a lot.
There was also an increased incidence of anaemia.
