New test for endometriosis.
Imagine if you could reliably diagnose endometriosis on an outpatient endometrial sample.
Wow!
Two recent papers give strong hopes that this will be feasible.
Unmyelinated nerve fibres have been demonstrated in the functional layer of endometrium in women with endometriosis.
But not in women with no endometriosis.
An endometrial sample is taken during the secretory phase.
It is then stained with one or more preparations, e.g. anti-human protein gene product 9.5 (PGP9.5).
This gives a measure of nerve fibre density.
Significant endometrial nerve fibre density = high probability of endometriosis.
If this is substantiated, it will revolutionise the initial investigation of infertility, pelvic pain, dysmenorrhoea endometriosis etc.
It might even be included in fertility investigations at relatively early stage.
